The 16th Summer Institute on Migration and Global Health will be held from June 15 to July 1, 2021. It is a great opportunity for participants to hear from experts about different health issues that affect mobile populations, and how national and international policies and practices have impacted migrant and refugee populations in Europe, the Americas, and other world regions.

Meet Some of the Speakers
Michaella Vanore, Ph.D.
Research fellow at the Maastricht Graduate School of Governance, Netherlands. She has worked on international projects addressing topics such as defining and analyzing poverty among migrant children, assessing the consequences of family-member migration for children and the elderly who remain in the home country, diaspora engagement and contributions in conflict and post-conflict settings, and remittances.
David López-Carr, NIH, Ph.D.
Professor at the University of California Santa Barbara in the Department of Geography. He researchers links among population, migration, health, and environment dynamics, with a focus on identifying optimal synergies for enhancing resilience, through ongoing projects in Latin America, Africa, and Asia.
Luz Garcini, Ph.D., MPH
Assistant Professor at the Center for Research to Advance Community Health (ReACH) at UT Health San Antonio's Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long School of Medicine. Garcini’s research focuses on the study of trauma, loss and grief among Latino immigrants. Her research is to inform policy and best practices among providers, develop and disseminate interventions for individuals and families facing adversity.
Ricardo Cortés Alcalá, Ph.D., MPH
General Director of Health Promotion at the Mexican Secretary of Health. He has served as Coordinator of Advisors to the Undersecretary of Prevention and Health Promotion, Adviser on Health Security to the General Director of CENAPRECE, Director of Surveillance Epidemiology of Non-communicable Diseases, and Deputy Director of Agreements and Commitments of the National Health Council.

PIMSA, a collaborative research program between Mexico and the U.S., provides opportunities for research that contributes to the development of evidence-based policies affecting migrants and their health.
Please view the full announcement for application details and timelines. This cycle is open to researchers from any of the University of California campuses, the University of Texas at El Paso, and the University of South Florida working in collaboration with researchers from the National Council for Science and Technology (CONACYT for its Spanish acronym) accredited institutions in Mexico, or with the Autonomous National University of Mexico (UNAM). Undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in any of the convening institutions may also apply for funding for their undergraduate or graduate thesis or dissertation that meets the priority area criteria.
Deadline to submit the required Letter of Intent is June 1, 2021.
PIMSA is administered by the Health Initiative of the Americas (HIA), a program of the School of Public Health at the University of California, Berkeley.
